Old San Juan is reminiscent of the Spanish Empire. This section of San Juan consists of a seven-square-block area that once was enclosed by a wall built by the Spanish.

This most powerful fortress in the Caribbean repeatedly was able to hold off would-be attackers. By the 19th century, however, the old city had become one of the most charming residential and commercial areas of the Caribbean.
