From the crenellated ramparts of the achingly picturesque walled village of Obidos, the view extends over an ocean of red tile roofs clear back to 1218. That’s when King Dinis presented the strategic port to his bride Isabel of Aragon as a wedding present.
Now left high and dry inland amid rich alluvial soil, the town is populated by family vineyards and descended upon by tourists who come for a taste of the medieval.
