Known as "The Pearl of the Mediterranean," Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt. The culture and ambience of Alexandria is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern.

Located at the western edge of the Nile River delta, the city rests on a narrow isthmus between the sea and Lake Maryut.

Much of ancient Alexandria is covered by modern buildings or is under water; only a few landmarks are readily accessible.
