Haifa is Israel’s chief seaport, on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Israel’s third largest city, Haifa lies on and around the slopes of Mount Carmel.

The city is the world center for the Bahai faith and is home to the Shrine of Bab and a Bahai temple. Some scholars believe Haifa derives its name from "Caiaphas," the high priest during the time of Jesus.
