Surrounded by the volcanoes Acatenango, Agua and Fuego, Antigua is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in South America. Originally the capital of Guatemala, Antigua lost this distinction to Guatemala City, due to an earthquake in 1773. Still, this historic city continues to be a tourist attraction, amazing visitors with its splendor.

In addition to the earthquake of 1773, Antigua has suffered from 15 other major earthquakes, as well as many floods and fires. Yet the city, which was founded in 1543, continues to survive and thrive.
