Saskatchewan is named after an important part of its geography: the Saskatchewan River. The word Saskatchewan comes from a Cree Indian term meaning "swiftly flowing."
The river is only one interesting part of the province. Although it is part of an area referred to as "the prairies," half of the province is covered by forest and one-eighth is made up of freshwater lakes.
